new work with jack henry
I’d worked with Jack Henry before, as talent on an outdoor clothing shoot.
We’d got to chatting in between setups, and I learnt more about the world of athletics and his pursuits in his chosen field.
I was keen for the opportunity to shoot some track and field, to see how it would look with my approach applied.
Jack arranged for me to come down to Ngā Puna Wai, his training grounds in Christchurch, New Zealand, on a bitterly cold but still evening. I was given access to shoot as he went about an evening of training.
We covered a few of the events that make up the Decathlon. The ones that he was training for that evening. Hurdles, sprints, some general training and warm-ups.
I wanted to try some things, which is kinda what testing is about for me. I wanted to bring some motion into the images, some imperfection on purpose. I shot a mixture of natural light and strobe setups for effect. I tried a vintage film lens and a handful of others.
We captured this set towards the end of the session, once the daylight faded, and the lights came on.
